Rich Horton - The Year's Best Science Fiction & Fantasy (2009-2018)

Hortoni valikuid iseloomustab vast suurem riskidele minek – nii on ta antoloogiatesse valinud ehk teistest koostajatest enam selliseid autoreid, kelle peale … nagu ei tulekski. Strahaniga sarnaselt on tema popimate autorite hulgas Reed, Link ja Bear; eripärasemaks on kindlasti Cooney ja Andersi „fännamine“ – kuid kõige eripärasemaks on nende autorite hulk, keda on vaid kord antoloogiasse valitud.

Eripärane on kindlasti seegi, et mitmel puhul on Horton antoloogiate saatesõnades rõhutanud, et lisaks uute autorite tutvustamisele on talle veelgi olulisem, et tekst oleks ka keeleliselt silmapaistev – tähtis pole vaid idee, niisamuti on oluline teksti teostus. Eks siit võiks mõelda, kui tähtis angloameerika kultuuriruumile võõraste autorite (eelkõige hispaania ja hiina keelest) vahendajate tegevus.

Valikuid kindlasti mõjutab sama kirjastuse (Prime Books) ilmutatav Paula Gurani dark fantasy & horror kogumik, nii on mõnigi Strahani valitud tekst ilmunud Hortoni asemel hoopis Gurani aasta parimate antoloogias. Kui teiste antoloogiate puhul tundub, et ilmuma hakkavad üha pikemad tekstid ning vähem kui 20 lk tekstid hakkavad vaat et vähemusse jääma (jutt vs jutustus?), siis Horton õnneks avaldab enamasti 20 või vähema lehekülgedega tekste (jällegi – aastatel 2015 ja 2016 ilmus samas kirjastuses Gurani koostatud aasta parimate SFF jutustuste antoloogia – millest taas nii mõnigi muu ilmus nii Gardner Dozois, Neil Clarke’i või Strahani antoloogiates, kuid jäi niisiis välja Hortoni antoloogiast).

Kui peaks juhtuma, et mõne eesti autori teos võiks ingliskeelses lugejaskonnas mingit tähelepanu leida, siis vast võimalikeim aasta parimate antoloogias taasavaldamise koht oleks Hortoni omas – nii nagu siin on ilmunud lätlasest Tom Crosshilli üks tekst.

Alljärgnevalt antoloogias ilmunud autorite nö pingerida, nagu näha, on ühel korral valitud autoreid teiste antoloogiate koostajate valikutega võrreldes ebaproportsionaalselt palju (kui oleks vähegi viitsimist, võiks muidugi arvutada, millise protsendi moodustavad „püramiidi“ alumised astmed, aga noh, mõni teine kord vast).
