Jonathan Strahan - The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year 1-12 (2007-2018)

Mingis mõttes on Jonathan Strahan mulle ingliskeelse nüüdisulme suunanäitaja – kuigi mu esimene kokkupuude niisuguse ulmega oli Gardner Dozois SF aasta parimate lugude antoloogiatega (naljakas, mida võib leida linnaraamatukogust!), siis südamelähedasemad on ikka Strahani SFF kogumikud (tervenisti läbi kahlanud 2015. ja 2017. aasta antoloogiatest; selle jälgedes olen ka Rich Hortoni  SFF antoloogiaid ostnud (neist otsast otsani läbinud 2015. aasta kogumiku), aga need pole veel päris klikanud – ning ma pole senini aru saanud, kas Hortoni 2017. aasta antoloogia on ilmunud või mitte, igal juhul on juba ülal nimekiri ka 2018. aasta valikust).

Niisiis, kuna nüüdseks on tosin antoloogiat ilmunud, tekkis juba mõni aeg tagasi huvi, et millised autorid on need, mis Strahani arvates on aktuaalsemad, kas ja milliseid anomaaliaid võib esineda teiste sama perioodi (2007-2018) antoloogiate koostajatega – Horton (SFF), Dozois (SF), ka David G. Hartwelli ja Kathryn Crameri ilmumise lõpetanud antoloogiad (2013. ilmus viimane SF, 2009. lõpetas F). Viimastel aastatel on Night Shade Books (kus ilmus Strahani 7 esimest antoloogiat, järgmised 5 on Solarise hingekirjas) ilmutanud Neil Clarke’i kolm SF antoloogiat; lühema SFF proosa kogumikke on John Joseph Adamsi kureerimisel ilmunud samuti kolm tükki. Servapidi puutuks kokku ka Paula Gurani dark fantasy & horrori aasta parimate antoloogiad – mõnigi Strahani valitud tekst on ühtlasi ilmunud Gurani valikus (Hortoni ja Gurani antoloogiad ilmuvad (ilmusid?) Prime Booksi kirjastuse poolt ühtse kujundusega, vist peale mõne harva erandi nad ei avaldanud samu lugusid). Selline on siis üldine mõõtkava; natuke olen vaadanud Hortoni ja Dozoisi koostamisi, natuke olen puudutanud teiste siin mainitud koostajate valikuid.

Strahani puhul on teiste aasta parimate antoloogiate võrdluses huvitav mitmete naisautorite suhteline populaarsus võrreldes teiste koostajate valikutega – Kelly Link, Caitlin R. Kiernan (keda teised koostajad pole üldse valinud; kas Strahan kui enamjaolt SF-antoloogiate koostaja pole fantasy asjus niivõrd laialdase lugemusega?), Ellen Klages; miks mitte Theodora Goss, Kij Johnson (samas on „alaesindatud“ Aliette de Bodard või Nancy Kress, Rich Hortoni lemmik C.S.E. Cooney jõudis alles 2018. aasta valikusse; üldse puudub Carrie Vaughn või Kage Baker või Vandana Singh või Mary Rosenblum või Naomi Kritzer).

Minu lemmik Joe Abercrombie on ainult Strahani valikutes; uutest autoritest on Strahan ainsana valinud paar korda Usman T. Maliku ja Kai Ashante Wilsoni proosat. Fantasy kirjutajatena on nt Margo Lanagan, E. Lily Yu, K. J. Parker esindatud lisaks vaid Hortoni valikutes. Teistega võrreldes on populaarsem Neil Gaimani ja ehk ka Peter S. Beagle’i lühijutud.

Kõigi koostajate lemmikud on eelkõige Robert Reed ja ehk ka Elizabeth Bear, teistest suurematest lemmikutest on Strahan vähem esile tõstnud Alastair Reynoldsi lühemat loomet (peaks võrdluseks vaatama Infinity-sarja autorite koostist, seal on Reynolds üsna tavaline külaline; sel suvel ilmubki viimane selle sarja antoloogia). Puudub Paul Cornell, Gregory Benford, John Barnes, Sean McMullen, Chaz Brenchley (ja eks vähemesindatud autoreid võiks veelgi nimetada – aga mitmedki neist  (ja eelpool nimetatutest) on esindatud Infinity seerias (nt "Reach for Infinity" ja "Infinity Wars") ja muudes antoloogiates; ühesõnaga mõneti meeldiv, et Strahan oma antoloogiatest tekste suurt ei taaskasuta); noh, mõnigi McMulleni lugu on minu meelest loetav olnud.

Muidugi, mingil moel tuleb arvestada, et antoloogiates ei saa kõiki lugusid avaldada seoses erinevate autoriõigustega; ääriveeri olen ka mõistnud, et mõnegi autori puhul arvestatakse sedagi, mis on ilmunud teiste koostajate antoloogiates – ses suhtes üks veidramaid näiteid on viimaste aastate meteoor Rich Larson, kel 2017. aastal ilmus 4 aasta parimate antoloogias (Strahan, Horton, Dozois, Clarke; vaid Adamsi kureeritavasse valikusse ei mahtunud) 5 lugu kokku 7 juhul.

Aga alljärgnevalt siis kaks autorite koondnimekirja; esmalt üldine populaarsuse edetabel (mitu lugu on autorilt kaheteistkümne aasta jooksul valitud), seejärel autorite ja nende lugude register (ja kui siin blogis on neist mõni lause kirjutatud, siis olen püüdnud selle lingi ka loo juurde panna). Kui ühel lool on kaks autorit, siis on nad kumbki sama looga eraldi esindatud.
