Amal El-Mohtar - Seasons of Glass and Iron (2026)

 

Eesti raamatupoeketid ikka üllatavad - kui muidu laiutavad ingliskeelses ulmesektsioonis romantasylaadsed tooted, siis millegipärast võeti müüki ka selle autori jutukogu. Kõvakaaneline ja suhteliselt kallis (nüüdseks küll alla hinnatud), eks selle kodulehel ja riiulis nägemine üllatas sedavõrd, et ostsin endalegi - mitte et ma oleks El-Mohtari varem pühendunult lugenud (siiski, viis teksti), kuna sügavama mulje jätnud vms. Aga noh, uudishimu.

Tundub, et autor küll kasutab hoolsalt teadusliku fantastika ja fantaasia (rohkem küll viimast) võtteid, aga lood on ikka inimeseks olemisest, indiviidist ja lähedusest, kuidas olla mitte nii katki. Ja LGBT eri temaatikatest. Kuigi Kanada autor, on päris palju idamaist teemat (ma nüüd küll ei julge näpuga näidata, pakuks eelkõige Pakistani ja Pärsia kanti). Aga siiski, peamine ikka see inimeseks olemine, kui katki sa ka ei ole.

14 loo (raamatus on lisaks luuletusi) keskmine hinne on 4,7; eks enamvähem keskmine kogemus, keskmist hinnet tõmbasid alla kaks lühilugu, mis ei tekitanud mingit elamust.

Theodora Goss - Letters from an Imaginary Country (2025)

 

Kogumikuga võiks seostuda mitu märksõna, mida tekstid ühel või kombineeritul viisil puudutavad. Laiemalt võttes võiks lüüa kogu kaheks - tekstid väljamõeldud maadest (Cimmeria, Thüle, Pellargonia) ja siis klassikaliste angloameerika fantaasiatekstide töötlused (Oz, Narnia, Frankenstein, Dracula jms). Tõsi, on ka nö autobiograafilisel ainesel tekstid, mis omavad kokkupuuteid rohkem esimese teemaga - üleüldse on tihti siinsetel tekstidel nö metakirjanduslik maik man; näiteks esitatud akadeemilisest vaatenurgast või siis tegelaste kirjade kaudu. On tekstid, mis on algusest otsani klassikalised fantaasialood; on tekste, mis lähevad üle nö kvaasireaalseks või puha fantastiliseks. Ja muidugi - palju mängimist autori endaga (koguni omamütoloogia, eksole), lisaks identiteediküsimustele ka maitseid akadeemilisest eluolust; ja muidugi küsimus Ungarist, mis kõigist vastuoludest hoolimata saab ühe palavad armastuskirja läbi raamatu.

Kui “The Collected Enchantments” puhul imestasin, et kuhu jäi osa tekste, siis nüüd nende kahe kogumikuga paistab olevat ülevaade Gossi kogu lühiloomest (vist on küll mõni lugu, mis pole küll neis taasilmunud). Isiklikult jättis vägevama mulje esimene kogumik, nö muinasjutukogu - seda eelkõige seepärast, et need töötlused Ozi või Frankensteini või teiste klassikute teemadel … nojah, ma tõesti ei tunne huvi Narnia vms algtekstide lugemiseks. Mingil moel seetõttu tundub, et see kogumik tegelikult rohkem ameerika lugejatele (kasvõi nende töötluste pärast), sellest ka siis mõned nägemused Euroopast on kuidagi … Ameerikast kogetuna? Ei oskagi seda kuidagi selgemalt kokku võtta.

Aga noh, Goss on Goss, ka tema nõrgemad tekstid on väärt viit punkti (v.a. “Pug”, ka järelsõna lugemine ei kutsunud seda ümber hindama). Juttude keskmine hinne 5,7, mis on ikka väga hea (ja esimene kogumik oli veel parem: 5,9).

Kahtlemata huvitav antoloogia - kasvõi juba selle poolest, et ühe kooliprojekti ulmekirjutamise töötoa tulemustest on koostatud raamatu; ehk siis arvatavalt on tegu noorte üldse esimese trükiprooviga. Ja eks Narva on boonuseks, aga sama huvitavalt võiks mõjuda ka Kärdla või Jõhvi või Viljandi või Maardu õpilaste loome - sest eks ikka on põnev, mida noored inimesed võivad kujutleda.

Viimasel ajal on mul miski hirm, et kui loed tundmatu autori värsket teksti, siis kui tehisvaba see ikka on. Antud antoloogia puhul on pigem, et 2-3 teksti puhul võinuks ehk autor anda oma teksti võõrale lugejale, et see võiks oma pilguga mõndadele ebakõladele osutada (teksti sidusamaks kirjutamine, ehk tausta rohkem avamine) - no juhul muidugi, kui eesmärk võiks olla mingil määral lugejasõbralik.

Ja eks juba esimese loo puhul tekkis küsimus, et kuidas neid tekste õieti hinnata - kas konteksti arvestades (noorte trükiproov, lähtudes vaid sellest raamatust) või siis nö kontekstivabalt (võrdluses ükskõik millise teise lühiproosa palaga, mida olen selle blogi ajal lugenud). Otsustasin viimase kasuks, aga paratamatult - ükski verinoor kirjutaja ei saa veel kuidagi Theodora Gossi või Aliis Aalmanni kvaliteediga kirjutada; see oleks … ulme. Igal juhul, lugude keskmine hinne on 4,2.

Kahju, et kogumiku kaanepilt on päris kole, vähemalt on see teadatuntud koledus, mitte mõni tehisklišee.

Huvitav meeldetuletus nullindate (angloameerika) fantaasiakirjandusest - siin on klassikuid kaugetest aegadest (ikka veel!), siin on nüüdseks hääbuvaid või ununenud klassikuid, siin on praeguseid klassikuid, siin on nüüdseks oluliseid autoreid, kes on nullindatel hakkasid tähelepanu koguma. Ja muidugi väga palju autoreid, kellest pole enne midagi kuulnud ning pole hiljemgi muudes kogumikes kohanud (aga millised autoritutvustused neid saadavad, eksole). Kuskilt olen kuulnud, et Hartwelli ja Crameri valikuid iseloomustab pigem klassikalisem lähenemine ulmekirjandusele, seega siin just väga ei ole vandermeerlikke või strahanlikke teravamaid valikuid. Ja ikka see vana nutulaul - kuidas küll praeguseks kümnendiks on sellised antoloogiasarjad pea täielikult välja surnud.
