“As always, Burton felt awed by the sight of the Steam Man.
The most famous and successful engineer in the world stood on three multi-jointed mechanical legs. These were attached to a horizontal disk-shaped chassis affixed to the bottom of Brunel's body. The body was like a barrel lying on it's side, with domed protrusions at either end. Each of these bore nine triple-jointed arms, and each arm ended in a different tool, ranging from delicate fingers to slashing blades, drills, hammers, spanners, and welders.” (lk 45)
Leiutisi on niivõrd
palju, et tekib küsimus, kuidas need kõik peaksid Londonisse ära
mahtuma, kõik need Folks Wageni põrnikad ja aururaudteed või siis
hoopis kummalised liikumisvahendid, mille selgemaks kujutluseks
kuluks vast illustratsioonid ära. Raamatus asetleidev võimuvastane
mäss on niivõrd vägivaldne ja ulatuslik (paralleel mõne
nüüdisaegse linnamässuga?), et tekitab viimaks küsimuse, kas pole
väheke üle pakutud (alljärgnev tsitaat on küll pigem
huumorivallast). Vähemalt puudub siin imal romantika, vaid Swinburne
väheke naudib piitsutamist. Nojah, kui esimest raamatut soovitaks
paljudele lugemiseks, siis teine sobib vast rohkem spetsiifilisemale
maitsele. Ehk oleks pidanud endale jätma väheke hingetõmbeaega
osade vahel, see mustade teemantide jant ei hakanud mulle suurt
tööle.
“As they penetrated the thickening fog, the walking dead, with swordsticks drawn, came staggering out of it to meet them. They were well dressed, debonair, and faultlessly polite.
“I'm mortified,” one of them confessed as he jammed his fingers into constable's eye sockets. “This really is despicable behaviour and I offer my sincerest apologies.”
“I say!” another exclaimed, plunging his blade into a man's abdomen. “What a terrible to-do!”
“It's all rather unseemly,” noted a third, urbanely, after spitting a chunk of flesh from his mouth. He looked at throatless uniformed man he held slumped in his arms. “I do hope you won't consider me boorish.”” (lk 403)
